If you look through my family’s photo albums, there are fewer pictures of me than anyone else. Initially this was because I was the third child, and we all know how that goes. But later on, it was because more times than not I was the photographer. Although I love motion pictures for long-form storytelling, there is magic in freezing a fleeting moment of time never to be repeated; capturing a look, a thought, history unfolding; conveying a powerful story through one single image.

I want to become the best documentary filmmaker I can be. So, I applied to Stanford’s full-time, graduate documentary program, was thrilled to be one of the 10 people accepted that year, left a great job and moved across the country to pursue the dream. Those two years were fairly intense, but they definitely helped me improve and hone my craft. Click on the links to the right to view some of the pieces I’ve created in my current position at Johns Hopkins University.

With a desire to produce films which highlight our commonality and shine a spotlight on issues of social concern, Renee Fischer launched Spring and Fall Productions, LLC, with fiscal sponsorship through Fusion Partnerships.

Its first documentary, “Book By Its Cover,” was completed in 2020. The film follows three dads who are inmates at the Baltimore County Detention Center as they participate in a literacy program which allows contact visits, reading to their children. When a parent is sentenced to jail time, his/her whole family can be put into crisis and survival mode, and 2.3 million children in the United States have an incarcerated parent.

Resources for families facing this situation, can be found here.

With a background in writing news articles to ad concepts, shooting photos on the fly and with more elaborate lighting set ups, Renee’s versatility may be best highlighted through the documentary films she produces, directs, writes and edits.

In the past, Renee had the opportunity to travel to places like Guatemala, Kosovo and Rwanda as the director of broadcast media for Catholic Relief Services. She also immersed herself into the world of emergency medicine as an associate producer for the Discovery Health series, “The Critical Hour.” Since 2005, she has worked as a senior associate director of Development Communications for Johns Hopkins University, producing award-winning films, while also shooting still photos and contributing to the editorial team.

She graduated with honors and a double major of Communication Arts and English from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She earned her M.A. from Stanford University in documentary film, with her thesis film winning a Student Academy Award.

Her still work has been published in a variety of print and web publications, and her independent film work has been screened at multiple film festivals including the Maryland Film Festival, Cinequest, the DC Independent Film Festival, and the United Nations Association Film Festival.
